The main challenges for agriculture in the 21st century are ensuring global food security and increasing participation in ensuring energy security through the production of energy from biomass.
INTENSE focuses on integrated solutions based on land management systems consisting in the intensification of agricultural production in previously neglected areas, i.e. meadows, fallow and marginal lands, post-industrial areas. The potential of these lands will be unlocked through innovative environmental management systems, open to the sustainable production of a wide variety of new products and services. For these reasons, the INTENSE project is part of the FACCE-JPI subject area (Theme 2: Balancing the intensification of integrated food and non-food systems in agriculture).
The aim of INTENSE is to develop systems for increasing the productivity of soils by improving the conditions of biological life and other treatments increasing their fertility.
Restoring to agricultural production chemically contaminated soils, soils with a negative water balance and with low fertility requires research on (a) identification of plant species with high biomass gain on marginal and / or polluted land for composting or biogas production, (b) developing agrotechnics for selected plants, (c) research on the use of selected plant species for phytoremediation, and (d) evaluation of the yield of selected plant species on marginal, polluted, fallow and degraded soils.
The solutions developed in the project will allow the inclusion of marginal lands in the production and thus achieve both environmental (increasing soil fertility) and economic benefits (renewable energy).
The main goal of the project is to increase the production of food and non-food plant biomass by including marginal soils in agricultural production. The main goal will be implemented through specific goals
- Defining and standardizing the methodology of identification and reclamation of degraded soils with a special degradation status.
- Development and implementation of appropriate cultivation systems to improve the physical and chemical properties of degraded soils. For this purpose, cultivation systems will be developed and optimized, using precision farming methods and computer models
- Design and implementation of sustainable and financially attractive production solutions on reclaimed agricultural land
- Increasing soil productivity will be implemented in particular by: a) reducing the amount of mineral fertilizers, replacing them with products based on composts derived from biodegradable waste, b) biological methods of cleaning soil contaminated with heavy metals, c) selection of plants for cultivation in degraded areas, d) the use of microorganisms to increase the productivity and health of plants (e) improving soil quality and reducing the exposure of the food chain to contamination.
The INTENSE project envisages exploring the possibility of increasing food production in Europe by 20%, using sustainable methods and improving the nutrient cycle. It will also contribute to the improvement of the functioning of the agricultural sector. The subject of research will be contaminated areas and fallow land. The project envisages the use of remote sensing methods and ecotoxicological test procedures to develop recommendations for land use. Indicators on soil quality, biodiversity and water quality will also be developed, which will be used to manage nutrients at the farm scale. INTENSE also foresees the dissemination of the accumulated knowledge through training young scientists and the creation of a network of potential recipients interested in the project results.
