History

The modern Department of Agronomy, established by the Senate of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, has been in operation since January 1, 2000. Historically, the Department follows the tradition of the Society for Scientific Courses (SSC) established in 1906, where didactic classes were conducted thematically consistent with the current scope of its activities.

From 1906, at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Society for Scientific Courses in Warsaw, lectures were given on general soil and plant cultivation, 2 hours a week in semester 4, and detailed plant cultivation, 3 hours a week in semester 5. The lecturers at that time were, among others, in Antoni Sempołowski, Stefan Moszczeński, Witold Staniszkis. The discipline of cultivating meadows and pastures appeared a little later, as it derives from the lectures given by Józef Mikułowski-Pomorski (in the program from 1911). The first official organizational unit was the Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Agriculture established in October 1911 as part of the Society for Industrial and Agricultural Courses, which was established by the transformation of the TKN in the same year. Witold Staniszkis is widely recognized as the founder of Department of Agriculture (1920), established by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.

In 1935, Department of Meadows and Pastures was established, the organizer and manager of which was Zygmunt Golonka, and from 1947 the management of the Department was taken over by Jan Grzymała. In the years 1949–1952, three independent departments were established: in 1949 - General Soil and Plant Cultivation under the supervision of prof. Mieczysław Birecki, in 1950 - Detailed Plant Cultivation under the supervision of prof. Anatol Listowski, in 1952 - Growing Meadows and Pastures under the supervision of prof. Jan Grzymała. In 1970, the Institute of Plant Production was established, which included the following departments: General Soil and Plant Cultivation, Detailed Plant Cultivation, Meadows and Pasture Cultivation, and the Seed Plant headed by prof. Władysław Byszewski, and then prof. Daniela Ostrowska. An organizational unit called "Collection of Agricultural Cultivated Plants" was also established under the supervision of doc. Tadeusz Szczygielski. In 1982, most of the Institutes at WULS-SGGW were closed and they returned to cathedral structures. From the Institute of Plant Production, the following departments were created: General Soil and Plant Cultivation, Detailed Plant Cultivation, Meadows and Pasture Cultivation.

From January 1, 2000, in accordance with the decision of the Agricultural Faculty Council confirmed by the Senate resolution, six large departments were established at the Faculty, including the Department of Agronomy.

In the years 2000–2012, the Department of Agronomy consisted of three departments: Grassland, General Soil and Plant Cultivation, and Detailed Plant Cultivation. In recent years (2000-2012), the Department of Łąkarstwa was headed by prof. dr hab. Piotr Stypiński, Department of General Soil and Plant Cultivation was headed by prof. dr hab. Andrzej Radecki and the Department of Detailed Plant Cultivation were headed by prof. dr hab. Jan Rozbicki.

Pursuant to the decision of the Faculty Council, from January 1, 2013, no plants are separated in the organizational structure of the Department of Agronomy. The first head of the Department of Agronomy was prof. dr hab. Piotr Stypiński, who held this position in 2000-2002 and 2010-2012. Then the heads of the Department were prof. dr hab. Andrzej Radecki (2003-2009), prof. dr hab. Zdzisław Wyszyński (2013-2016), dr hab. Irena Suwara, prof. SGGW (2016-2019), dr hab. Stanisław Samborski, prof. SGGW (2020). Currently, the head of the Department is dr hab. Arkadiusz Artyszak, prof. SGGW.
